As a parent paying for private tuition, you will want to know that you are getting value for money.
I have worked with a range of pupils who have varying degrees of ability, helping them reach their potential; for many, this means exceeding the targets set for them by their schools. I am familiar with the formats and expectations of all the major exam boards and, having marked exam papers in the past, am familiar with the skills required for the best grades.
GCSE and IGCSE English Language exams are designed to develop understanding a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, and analysing how writers use language and structure to create meaning and impact.
In my lessons, I focus on turning these skills into higher grades. Pupils are taught clear, step-by-step methods to approach each question with confidence, helping them to explain not just what a writer is doing, but why. This is exactly what examiners reward.
Alongside this, I support pupils in applying these techniques in their own writing, so they can produce more thoughtful, controlled and effective responses. With regular practice, targeted feedback, and strategies tailored to their exam board, pupils build the skills and confidence needed to improve their marks and achieve their target grades.
For those students who are aiming for top grades, the focus is firmly on results. Pupils are taught exactly what examiners are looking for in top-band answers, with clear, structured approaches to each question. They learn how to move beyond basic understanding and develop detailed, perceptive analysis that meets the criteria for the highest marks.
Every skill we build is directly linked to improving exam performance. Pupils practise using high-level vocabulary, embedding precise quotations, and structuring their responses in a way that secures marks consistently. In their writing, they are shown how to craft engaging, purposeful pieces that demonstrate control, accuracy and sophistication — all key features of Grade 7–9 responses.
GCSE and IGCSE English Literature can feel demanding, even for pupils who enjoy reading. Your child is expected to study a range of challenging texts, including a nineteenth-century novel, a Shakespeare play, a modern text and a poetry anthology. Success in these exams depends on more than understanding the texts: your child must clearly analyse themes, characters, and context, and explain how writers use language and structure to create meaning in a way that meets exam criteria.
Many pupils find the biggest challenge is applying these skills under timed exam conditions. Even strong students can struggle to organise their ideas quickly, remember key quotations that are relevant to the question set, write with precision, and consistently reach the higher mark bands, especially when they don't have the book in front of them to refer to.
For IGCSE pupils, coursework for some units can provide an excellent opportunity to secure higher grades, but only when this is approached with a clear structure and careful attention to the assessment objectives. With the right guidance, this can significantly boost overall results.
I will focus on helping your child turn their understanding into higher marks. Through carefully tailored lessons, your child will learn how to structure top-level responses, use evidence effectively and meet the expectations of the examiners. We will practise exam-style questions regularly, refine techniques and build the confidence needed to perform under pressure.
With consistent support from me, your child will not only improve their skills, but will see clear progress in their grades - often moving up by multiple grade boundaries - whilst developing the confidence to approach their exams feeling prepared, capable, and in control.
Each one-hour lesson is designed to help your child grow in confidence, strengthen their reading and writing skills, and achieve their full potential in GCSE English. (See testimonials)
